A half-resurrected cleanup man for Death’s sprawling bureaucracy faces a phantom pachyderm, doll-collecting sorceresses and his own ghoulish bosses. Gordo, the old Cubano that watches over the graveyards and sleeping children of Brooklyn, stirs and lights another Malagueña. Down the midnight streets of New York, a whole invisible universe churns to life in this collection of Bone Street Rumba tales. Chronologically, these stories come between Midnight Taxi Tango and Battle Hill Bolero. Fresh, smart, and just excellent…It’s funny and wise and keeps you turning pages and the prose is truly fresh.” –John Green #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Fault in Our Stars “Simply put, Daniel José Older has one of the most refreshing voices in genre fiction today.” –Saladin Ahmed Author of Throne of the Crescent Moon “There is such musicality and electricity in Daniel José Older’s Salsa Nocturna. His stories might best be characterized as ghost noir, set in the streets of New York, featuring the world we know and one just beyond our imagining.” –The Nation

Salsa Nocturna A Bone Street Rumba Collection Daniel José Older 9781625672414 Books

I purchased this collection of short stories after reading Older's first full-length novel, Half Resurrection Blues. That book completely blew me away, and I had to have more.

I read for fun. I read for relaxation. My job requires heavy analysis, so I try to avoid recreational reading that makes me work too hard. I also steer clear of fluff.

This book (along with Older's subsequent offering) strikes a perfect middle ground. It serves up action with a purpose and fantasy mixed with humanity. Older mixes philosophy and breezy vulgarity while neither pontificating nor descending into sleaze. His books provoke thought, but without beating the reader over the head with heaviness.

The plots are just twisty enough. The settings are both familiar and completely foreign. The characters are complex in their simplicity.

Short version (too late): This book and this author are a delight. I can't wait for the next one.

Salsa Nocturna A Bone Street Rumba Collection Daniel José Older 9781625672414 Books Reviews

This is a brilliant, fun, scary and funny book of short stories set in the Bone Street Rumba universe - one of the best universes in fiction! I love spending time in this world with these fascinating characters who are written so well and feel real, imperfect, compelling and I just want to know everything about them. Some of the chapters are truly scary and nail-biting...some of the imagery will stay with me forever. You really should read this book.
SALSA NOCTURNA is, as other reviewers have commented, hard to describe Winesburg Ohio meets Sandra Cisneros meets Neil Gaiman meets Borges, Raymond Chandler and Frida Kahlo. And it all works against the vibrant landscape of a literally haunted New York. Older has created a set of linked stories which feature a group of surprising Knights Errant, some alive, some dead, and one a half-dead soul detective named Carlos. Carlos' quest to find a mysterious woman, and to somehow do the right thing in a world where the dead do not always behave well towards the living (and the living do not behave well to anyone), unite these tales and keep us moving through the adventures. At once a valentine to the hard-boiled mystery story and to the comic ghost misadventures (a la GHOSTBUSTERS), Older's collection also critiques these traditions' sexist and racist pasts, offering a new, politically progressive, bilingually inflected, complex take on ethics, politics, and desire. We root for these surprising heroes, and we are treated along the way to startling poetic visions of a troubled but gorgeous city that at once epitomizes and deconstructs the American Dream.
THIS is how you write. Take notes, people! Vibrant, HUMAN, three-dimensional people of color ... it feels so insanely good to see myself reflected on the page.
I have read everything Older has released so far and suffice it to say that if he published it, I'd read his grocery list. The stories in this book are smart, spooky, original, touching, and fun. Older has a great strength in revealing his characters through their voice (internal monologues and external dialogue), and these stories leave you wishing there were novels in the worlds he builds. Good news!! There are. Buy his books and be entertained.
Older writes vivid, breathing characters that pull you into their experiences. I felt disappointed at the end of the first few chapters because I wanted to continue each story line. Once I saw the intersection of the stories, I was intrigued and pleased. Each character brings flavor to the stories, and I really enjoyed the way Older pokes fun at the standard (i.e., white) hero stories. He has also created a unique viewpoint on resistance to mindless bureaucracy.
I am eager to read Half-Resurrection Blues to find out what the living/dead/half-dead bunch will be doing next. Daniel Jose Older is an author I'll be watching and supporting.
If you're thinking about skipping this collection of short stories and jumping straight into Battle Hill Bolero, don't!!! It seems tempting just to consume the story as quickly as you can, but these short stories set up the events of the final book in the series.

For all that the series focuses on Carlos and the gang in the novels of the series, Salsa Nocturna delivers us a peek into the everyday lives of those in the whirling humdrum that is the spirit world of Brooklyn. This was the book I wanted to flesh out the world more fully so that I could see the perspectives of even those who have very little or no clue about the spirit world at all, and it's been executed amazingly, as expected of Daniel José Older.
I cannot recall a single story I didn’t absolutely love in Salsa Nocturna. Each and every one is chock full of the raw emotion, tenderness, humor, and humanity that I have come to expect from Daniel Jose Older's work. One thing I found lacking in his first novel, Half Resurrection Blues, was the connection with its characters. Don't get me wrong; the characters in HRB were a joy to read about, but so much of the novel was spent focusing on Carlos, I never felt truly connected to them. In Salsa Nocturna, Older not only fixes this problem, but he also makes some wonderful new additions the cast of the Bone Street Rumba series. This collection introduces us to many charming and loveable characters such as the immortal story collector or the musically gifted Gordo with his vigor and wisdom to engage the reader. Salsa Nocturna has made me anxious to learn more about these characters in the upcoming novels, Kris especially! In short, Salsa Nocturna is merely a sneak peak of what’s to come. I highly recommend this to readers who haven’t had the immense pleasure of reading Older’s work comprehend the full scope of his brilliance. You won’t regret it!
