Sometimes, we need to lose everything to find our way. Thirty-three year old Victoria had what she would call a perfect life. She was the homemaker wife of one of the church elders, and her whole world was wrapped up in the happenings of Grace Church. Sure, she hadn't been able to provide Isaac a son yet, but God sometimes worked in mysterious ways. All that changed when she met Sonny. Sonny, an artist that was new in town, intrigued Victoria from the moment they met by chance. Soon, the two of them begin a whirlwind romance that leaves Victoria with the hardest decisions of her life. And when the church, who her whole life revolved around, shunned her when she needed them the most, who did she have left to turn to? This debut novel by T. M. Opperman chronicles the journey of one woman as she finds herself forced to look past the politics of the church and find the true grace of God and the true definition of Christianity.

First up, I've got to say faith-based books aren't my usual genre but I flat out loved this book. It's like coming off the back of a Harley and gazing at a beautiful garden filled with peace and tranquility Ms.Opperman writes words that trickle over the soul like honey. I felt I was there in the Colorado mountains with Victoria, Sonny and Raine.Victoria married young to a much older controlling man. She did what was expected of her. She was content, sure, but it felt like she was existing. A chance encounter at local farmers market changed her world and tested her faith when she met Sonny. After an incident, her husband bans her from his life and the church. She's on her own with nothing. She is taken in by Raine, Sonny's mother, a woman with her own past. I loved watching Victoria blossom and grow as a woman. Loved the yoga and how Victoria related to that. Loved how she started to question instead of accept. For the first time she found what she wanted in life without someone or the church deciding for her.
Sonny is gorgeous. I love him. Although younger than Victoria he'd grown up pretty fast and saw beneath the structured Victoria to his Tori. He held himself away from Tori until he was sure what she wanted but his love for her shone through every page.
I had a harder time relating to Isaac, but that's because I don't get 'religion before everything' that he lived his life by, especially when we learn through a hilarious exchange between Victoria and Sonny that he isn't very pious himself.
Ms. Opperman's style of writing is delicious. I honestly felt like I knew these characters. There's an emotional depth to this story that had tears welling in my eyes and anger bubbling in my veins. Through all of that hope and determination is woven on every page.
I'm am excited to read more of this up and coming writer.

By Any Other Name The Greatest of These T M Opperman Mel Finefrock Debra McGlynn 9781492233244 Books Reviews
I loved the story. Victoria has everything she could want a perfect husband, a perfect church, a perfect life, but what she doesn't have is anything that is real. When she meets Sonny and Raine, she learns the true meaning of love and kindness.
As a new and aspiring author, Opperman's novel is alive with personality. Her style is fresh and free, her characters are fun and well rounded.
A quick and easy read, one that is completely capable of making you turn around at the end of the day and realize you didn't accomplish anything else outside of devouring the story.
Victoria lives in backwoods Smalltown, USA, a member of a clannish congregation who shun anything outside their restrictive code of ethics and expectations. As Victoria makes the worst mistake of her life, she realizes to the full extent that her church goes by the bible of a vengeful god, not a loving and forgiving god.
Cruelly kicked out and completely cut out of the lives of everyone who had been her support and foundation, Victoria finds a restorative peace and learns of a bigger god than her small-minded church could ever imagine.
It is not by any means a preachy story. It's realistic in that there are churches with this mind-think that turn so many people off and they turn away. It is also realistic in that no matter how perfect lives look from the outside, a chance meeting, a weak moment, a single decision, can alter lives and perceptions and beliefs forever. And the sad reality is that there are women who live with controlling men, having the life sucked out of them and being sustained on the acceptance of conformity.
There are so many good things about this story. I felt my emotions being tugged along, always wanting to know what was going to happen next, and I was drawn in to care what happened to the characters, sympathizing with their agony and strife. Though I hated cold Isaac and thought he was an awful tightly wound control freak, I was shocked at his swift brutality, his vehement hatred thrashed out upon his crying, begging wife. And her scheming best friend's turnabout was a complete surprise as well. Judgmental Christians, pray for thyselves!
Though fiction, this story demonstrates so eloquently that so much beauty can come from so much pain, and the author wraps up the profound moral with skillful grace and without judgment.
By Any Other Name is aptly titled, the author cleverly creating a meaning within the meaning of the title. Be assured, By Any Other Name, this book would read as bittersweet.
An excellent read, and highly recommended. I cannot wait to read more by T.M. Opperman.
Loved the book. Sure hope the author continues the story of Victoria's new life as "Tori"...a new job...education....new church, etc...and will bring Sonny full circle back to love Victoria forever with marriage, kids, etc. Would love it if she would throw in that VIctoria's her ex best (backstabbing) friend Elizabeth becoming Isaac's new "barren" wife. THOSE TWO definitely deserve each other. Maybe have "Tori" and Sonny run into Elizabeth and Isaac in the grocery store in 5 years....Tori pushing a cart with a little baby girl in a carrier seat and Sonny carrying a 2 year old son. Anyway, that's how I picture it in my head. LOL.
